Our Expansion

Our Expansion

We are thrilled to share that we have completed a 4000 square foot build-out of the Booksmith, renovating and expanding into the storefront next door. Please stop by to see the expansion and shop for the holidays!

In February 2020, when we signed the lease to take over the former Verizon store, our hope was to bring light and life to the dark space next door. Our plan was to open a café to uplift and deepen our customer’s experience of our overall offering, and to have a new venue for our celebrated author events series. No one anticipated what would happen next.

We were closed to the public for over three months due to the pandemic. Once safe to return, we righted ourselves and leaned into the opportunity in front of us, with community support every step of the way. With some creative pivots, fabulous new partners, and our cherished customer’s top-of-mind, we moved forward.

Today, our new space is teeming with bestselling items, including our 100 top books, hidden book gems, and curated gift tables, as well as colorful and challenging puzzles, gorgeous calendars and planners, and unique greeting cards. While different from our original café vision, in the heart of our expansion we have opened The Novel Kitchen, our wonderful food and beverage concept designed specifically for the ‘new normal.’

Given the extra space, we have also refreshed the rest of the store, expanded our beautiful gift and lively kids' sections, widened aisles for more spacious browsing, and improved the way customers flow through the store. (As always, you enter through our main entrance at 279 Harvard St, but now you exit through 283 Harvard.) Our former checkout area is now our information desk (aka, Infosmith), and our free curbside pickup window is just outside our main entrance.
