Lisa, buyer and assistant manager. My specialty, and greatest love, is international literature. I also love children's books, having two avid young readers at home.
I've just learned of this book and have delved into it so quickly and with such hunger that I am almost frightening myself. It feels like a holy text for anyone who seeks to learn, as well as a step-by-step manual for introducing one's children to the rigor and the beauty of an examined life.

This book is changing my life, as a parent and as a being. I feel so blessed to have found it here, at Booksmith, accidentially, while helping another harried mom look for discipline books in our parenting section. The beauty of simplicity has always intrigued me but not until now have I understood its intimate link to the mysterious virtue of less.

The single best parenting book I have ever read, an anti-parenting book really. If only I'd read it earlier, I think to myself, but there is still time. Hodgkinson is a hilarious and utterly inspiring guide through the pitfalls of contemporary parenting. Even if one cannot embrace his views completely, just knowing that this perspective exists works as a joyful corrective for the fatigue and anxiety that so often accompany child rearing these days. Thank you Tom Hodgkinson!

A strange little book: evocative, mysterious, more like watching a series of images in a world-less film but also oddly telling and subtly challenging to the reader’s sense of self.
