Happy New Year from all of us at Brookline Booksmith! We are open and ready for browsing!
Yes! Our newly expanded store at 279 Harvard Street in Brookline is open for browsing, phone assistance, and curbside pickup. Please visit our About page for our most up-to-date hours. We are open 24/7 to take orders right here on our website.
Online orders typically take a few days to process. If your order includes items that are not in stock or that are on hold for other customers, it will take additional time for more copies to be shipped to us. If you need a book immediately, please call the store at 617-566-6660 to make your purchase over the phone.
If a listing on our website says “On Our Shelves Now,” we probably have a copy in stock. (If it says "Out of Stock In Store," you can still place an order and we will request the book(s) from our distributor.) However, please note that our website is not updated in real-time, and it does not reflect items that are on hold for other customers. If you want to double-check an item's availability, please call the store at 617-566-6660.
Out of stock titles typically take at least 3-5 business days to arrive at the store. However, due to the pandemic, there may be some delays. We cannot guarantee specific delivery dates.
Yes! Curbside pick-up is now available at our new slide-through window at 279 Harvard Street during store hours. All curbside pick-up orders must be paid for in advance either online or over the phone. You will receive a notification email confirming that your order is ready for pickup if you order online. Please make sure you have received and read that email before coming to the store.
No, we do not offer local delivery.
Yes, if you are shipping within the United States. Unfortunately, we do not ship internationally at this time. We offer USPS Priority Mail (2-5 business days) and USPS Media Mail (10 or more business days). Please note that Media Mail is not insured. Missing package claims must be made with the post office.
Please Note: If some of the books that you request are out of stock at the store and need to be ordered, we will wait to ship your order until we receive all of your books. If you would prefer for your books to be shipped as they are available, there will be an additional shipping fee for each package.
Yes. The post office is experiencing delays due to the COVID-19 crisis, especially with USPS Media Mail. If an order is time-sensitive, such a gift, we recommend ordering further in advance than you normally would and choosing USPS Priority Mail.
Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to request your USPS tracking number.
Any missing package claims must be made with the USPS directly. We can provide the USPS tracking number if you email us at email@example.com. Brookline Booksmith is not responsible for packages lost in the mail.

Please contact us by phone at 617-566-6660 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org if you need to cancel your order. If your order has already been completed, we cannot refund you through the website and will need to do so over the phone or at the store.
With a heavy heart, no. Due to COVID-19, we have suspended our gift-wrapping service for the time being. We do, however, offer a beautiful selection of gift wrap and cards for sale in the store.
Yes. In the comments section at checkout, please write out your gift message, and we will include it on a greeting card with your package. Please keep in mind that gift messages must be handwritten and that our cards are small: short and sweet messages are best!
On our website, you can purchase any full-priced book (that we carry or that is available for us to order) or our gift cards. Many of our popular items, like cards, puzzles, journals, used books, bargain books, and art supplies are not currently available for purchase online. Please visit the store, or call us at 617-566-6660 to purchase these items over the phone.
No. However, because our online catalog is powered by a third-party service, sometimes books are listed on our website that are unavailable for us to order, including self-published books. We are not able to remove these books from our store, unfortunately. If you want to check if a given book is available, please call us at 617-566-6660 or email us at email@example.com.
No. We only sell physical gift cards at this time. They can either be mailed to a recipient free of charge or they can be picked up at the store. The physical gift cards can be redeemed online, over the phone or in the store.
While we hope to offer customers ebooks on www.brooklinebooksmith.com sometime soon, you can purchase them from our affiliate page on Bookshop in the meantime. Once on our page, search for the book you want, and select “get the ebook.” Please note that while we receive a small commission on sales made through our affiliate page on Bookshop, we do not own or operate Bookshop and we cannot assist you with orders placed through their website.
Yes! You can buy a gift card to use in the store, over the phone, or online. You can attend a virtual event. You can become a Brookline Booksmith Member and enjoy access to our Bi-annual 20% Off Member Sale. You can buy and sell used books. And, you can keep in touch with us by signing up for one of our newsletters, following us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook or visiting our blog. We are so grateful to be open for our customers, who have been such a tremendous support throughout the pandemic.
We are taking every precaution to protect the health and safety of our customers and staff. There is easy-to-access hand sanitizer in the store and a limit on how many people we can have in the store at any one time. While in the store or during curbside pick-up, customers and staff must wear a face mask that covers both the nose and the mouth and follow social distancing protocols.
