The National Book Award Finalist and PEN/Hemingway winner Louis Begley (Wartime Lies, About Schmidt) returns to the life of Albert Schmidt. At 78, Schmidt is alone, having reached a truce with his daughter--but not with her mother-in-law or husband, having lost his Puerto Rican love. But with the whole country high on hope at the start of 2008, Schmidt sees a second chance for himself in Alice Verplanck, a former love who is ready to forgive him. As Schmidt looks back on his life and mistakes, will he find himself worthy of forgiveness, of this last chance at happiness?
